To Whom It May Concern,

As the director of the UW-Botany Greenhouses and Garden, I have known Mike Kmiotek for several years.  Mike is a gifted artist who specializes in garden sculpture.  In spring of 2007, he installed the sculpture, “Venus Flytrap” in our Botanical garden for a one-year term, and it generated many positive comments.   The garden is located on Bascom Hill, facing University Avenue.  The sculptures were placed near our new pond and pavilion with seating provided for students.  They were the perfect size for our garden and accented the plantings very nicely.  Of special interest to garden visitors was the way the sculpture moved.  By pushing on one part of the sculpture, the modified leaves close around an insect perched there.  An attached,  matching insect swings below the modified leaf.  This sculpture can be viewed on YouTube.

Mike earned his BS degree through UW-Madison, and has also completed the Master Gardener program through the UW-Madison extension.  He helped determine where the Venus Flytrap should be placed, and was very instrumental with the final installation.  Mike is easy to work with and very reliable.

I would definitely recommend Mike's work for future installations.  Please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Mo Fayyaz Ph.D.
